📣Marketing for African sellers — what actually works in 2026

WhatsApp + Reels + Marketplace boosts beat fancy funnels every time. Here’s the playbook.

Marketing in Africa is not what marketing courses teach. Funnels, A/B tests, and complicated email sequences are for businesses that already have 10,000 customers. For sellers from zero to a thousand, four channels do 95% of the work: WhatsApp, short video, marketplace boosts, and word-of-mouth.

Channel 1: WhatsApp Business

WhatsApp is the single most powerful marketing channel on the continent because it’s where buyers already are. Get the basics right and you’ll outperform sellers spending 10× on paid ads.

  1. Use a WhatsApp Business account, not your personal one. Set business hours, an auto-reply, and a catalogue.
  2. Sync your Adwuma catalogue to WhatsApp — every new listing pushes automatically.
  3. Post one status update a day. Not promotional spam — a real product photo with a price and one line.
  4. Reply within 30 minutes during your set hours. Buyers DM 3-5 sellers; the first to reply usually wins.

Channel 2: Short-form video (Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts)

A 15-second video of you using your product or describing it candidly will outperform any professional ad. The platform algorithms reward authenticity over production value — which is the opposite of what TV ads taught us.

  • Show the product in use. Pour the oil. Try on the dress. Set up the speaker.
  • Talk to camera. Your face plus a story beats a faceless logo every time.
  • Post 3-5× per week. Volume beats perfection.
  • Reply to every comment. Each reply boosts the algorithm’s ranking of your post.

Channel 3: Marketplace boosts (Adwuma + Jiji)

For listings under 50,000 cedis, boosting on a marketplace where buyers are already shopping is more cost-effective than running cold-traffic Facebook ads. You pay roughly GH₵ 15-50 per week to keep a listing at the top of a category page that hundreds of intent-loaded buyers refresh daily.

Boost strategy

Start with the cheapest tier on your best-selling listing. Measure the orders. Reinvest the profit into more boost on the same listing before you spread budget across many.

Channel 4: Referral and word-of-mouth

Sellers consistently underrate this. A happy customer is your best marketing channel — and Adwuma’s referral program means you can pay them in app credit to share, not just cash.

  1. After every completed order, send a thank-you DM asking for a review.
  2. Include your referral code in your WhatsApp status. ADW-XXXXX is short enough to remember.
  3. Run a one-month "10% off if you’re referred" offer. Your code becomes the discount.
